Basil P. Sharp
Basil Price Sharp, 67, of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, October
24, 2002, in a traffic accident at an intersection near his home in the
District.
He was born in Marlinton, September 21, 1935, the son of Jane Price
Sharp, of Marlinton, and the late Basil C. Sharp. His father died in Germany
in 1944 during World War II.
Basil was graduated from Marlinton High School, Davidson College
(B.A.), Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia (M.Div.), and Union
Theological Seminary in New York, New York (S.T.M.). He initially served as
a minister to Presbyterian congregations in Kentucky and Tennessee. He then
served for nine years as a Presbyterian missionary in Taiwan. Following his
return to the United States, Basil served as a Regional Director with the
Institute for Cultural Affairs working on community development in cities
across the country.
For the past 18 years, Basil was a resident of Washington, D.C. He
worked with two congregations of the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in the
D.C. area, and he was Parish Associate of the Westminster Presbyterian
Church in the District. For the past 17 years, he also worked as a business
and computer consultant.
He expressed his abundant creativity by authoring several books,
including "The Adventure of Being Human: A Guide to Living A Fuller Life,"
and by participating in a modern dance troupe. He enjoyed outdoor sports,
including hiking, swimming, skiing, and fishing.
His wife of 41 years, Marie Blessing Sharp, survives him.
Also surviving him are his mother; two daughters, Dr. Heidi Harvie, of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Jane Sharp, of Boston, Massachusetts; a
son, Dr. Otto Sharp, of Asheville, North Carolina; two grandsons; a
granddaughter; a foster grandson; a brother, Dr. John C. Sharp, of
Marlinton; and a sister, Jane J. Sharp, also of Marlinton.
The Revs. Brian and Ruth Hamilton held funeral services at Westminster
Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, October 29. A service
in Marlinton is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 31, with the Rev.
Burt Newman. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Marlinton.
