Obituary - Dr. Harvey Winters McNeel aged 76 years, died at his home
in Hillsboro, on Monday morning November 1, 1948. he had been in ill
health the past eight years or more. He had worn himself out in the service
of his fellow man, as a country doctor. On Wednesday afternoon, the
funeral service was held from the Oak Grove Presbyterian church by his
pastor, Rev. J. K. Fleming. His body was laid to reset it the family
plot in Oak Grove Cemetery. The deceased was a son of the late
Isaac and Nannie Beard McNeel, of Mill Point. He married Miss
Elizabeth Edgar, who preceded him in death more than two years ago.
Their five children are Lane, Alfred and Paul; Harriet and Dorothy McNeel.
Of is father's family, there remains his sister, Mrs. Mary Gold Browning,
his twin brother, T. S. McNeel, and his brother J. Lanty McNeel. Thus
is noted the passing of one of our most useful and prominent citizens.
In the active practice of his profession as a physician for nearly a half
century, he literally wore himself out in service to suffering humanity.
Dr. McNeel was a graduate of the Washington and Lee University and the
Medical College of the University of Virginia. he took an active part
in public affairs, and for many terms he was elected member and president of
school boards, district and county,. Largely through his influence the
Hillsboro High School was established and the grade school built to make
Hillsboro again a school centre. Dr. McNeel was descended from the
best families of the Greenbrier Valley and his life fulfilled well the high
traditions of distinguished ancestry. |
