| Obituary - William Powell - William W. Powell, 58, of Bartow, retired Navy commander, died Sunday, March 24, 1974, near his home of a heart attack. He was born at Dry Fork, May 1, 1915, the son of the late William Henry and Betty Burton Powell. A graduate of Concord College, he was a former member of the Pocahontas Memorial Hospital Board. At the time of his death, Mr. Powell was a procurement officer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank. he also served as president of the Cass Country Store Corporation and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Brunswick, Georgia. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jessie Brown Powell; daughters, Mrs. Susan Leister of Germany; Mrs. Jane Nettles of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Ann Powell of Huntington; brothers Robert of Pearlsburg, Virginia, Harold of Charleston, and his mother-in-law; Mrs. Brown Beard. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at Arbovale United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Rittenhouse and the Rev. Billie Helmick officiating. Burial was in Arbovale Cemetery. |
