Lucinda Upchurch Beard and her husband's mother, Esther Stockton Beard both died the same year. Jonathan Upchurch (father of Lucinda Upchurch Beard), born 1820 in North Carolina was the son of Shadrack Upchurch, born 1784 and wife Ruth ---. He married Winifred Sloan in 1841. Winifred Sloan was daughter of Ruben Stone and wife Mary Keeton.

Ruben Sloan was killed while standing in the door of his home, by Champ Ferguson and his band of outlaws during the Civil War when they were attempting to steal his horses (Rf. Gertrude Beard Brown).

Jonathan Upchurch was taken prisoner in the Civil War. When be became seriously ill, he was let go and walked home. he got there late in the afternoon and asked his Grandma to fix him a pallet on the floor in front of the fire so we could warm his feet. He never got up but died in a few minutes. (Ref Gertrude Beard Brown).
